“‘Marie Désert’s works convey those sensations that make us feel alive. Each creation is an encounter with a memory, an emotion, the depth of what surrounds us.’”

Whether with an original or a signed, limited-edition reproduction, you can bring living art into your home.

MARIE Désert graduated with a degree in applied arts from the E.C.V. in Paris in 1999 and earned her agrégation in visual arts from Paris 8.

After spending about ten years working on portraits and genre scenes—inspired by scenes from movies, TV shows, and photos of her daily life—she has turned her attention to the emotional perception of time in landscapes. Her artistic language aims to put nature back at the center.

The artist alternates between painting—in three colors—drawing with pen and colored pencil, video, and her voice to shed light on what surrounds us but which we no longer see—those things that nevertheless make us feel alive. Although she never shows them, her photographs form the foundation of her work, much like cinema.

Through her multidisciplinary art, Marie Désert attempts to link distant worlds, and to represent our inner complexity. She creates the Art-de-porter project: kimonos mounted on ecological fabric on which her drawings or paintings are printed.

During her residency at 59 Rivoli, she installs the Bureau des émotions: a device using artificial intelligences – trained by Robinson Labourdette – to question the manual creation of the artist faced with the machine.

She co-creates a remote exhibition with François Cany during the 1st confinement L’amour au présent confiné, presented at Galerie 59 Paris in July 2020. Visitors physically evolve in what is usually virtual, and intimate: the birth of a love story whose exchanges are printed -up to 3x5M- with screenshots of Whats’App messages, Messenger… and 65 daily drawings from year 0 after Covid-19 originals.

Marie Désert creates artistic frescoes, the subject of which is discussed with the public: via the biennial Art contemporain et logement social with the Mairie de Paris 11e; and the DASCO in Paris elementary school.

Self-deprecating and committed, the artist went so far as to destroy one of his own murals for Permis de démolir in 2023. This event was an opportunity to produce a portrait of the artist, thanks to the ADAGP video portrait endowment, with Arte.

She co-creates the MagMaÔ collective with Magali Berdaguer and Aude Mouillot: circular, collaborative, participatory, playful art for the public, on their territories.

Marie Désert is developing a body of work consisting of experimental videos, using around 1,500 of her photographs and her voice. This project, entitled Photos animées, was supported by the ADAGP 2024 research grant.

The artist has shared her experience at conferences for the Hors Piste Festival at Beaubourg in 2018, for La Condamine in 2021, and as part of the Un artiste à l’école scheme in 2024.

Marie Désert has been elected to the ADAGP Board of Directors since 2021, and has joined the legendary La Ruche studio in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.
